President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been granted access by the election petition tribunal for the February 23 presidential poll to inspect the materials used for the elections.

Sahara Reporter reports that Buhari and the APC had applied in separate motions for ex parte orders to be granted to them to inspect the materials. Legit.ng gathered that the applications were made in preparation of its defence team against expected petitions to be filed by Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), challenging the outcome of the election.

It was learnt that the tribunal led by Justice Abdu Aboki, had on March 6, granted same order to PDP to inspect the election materials. In the ruling issued on Thursday, March 14, the tribunal granted Buhari and APC permission to inspect the electoral materials and obtain certified copies of the documents from INEC.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that President Muhammadu Buhari urged the tribunal to grant him access to inspect electoral materials used for the presidential election that was held on Saturday, February 23.

The bishops made the appeal following the discrepancies that characterized the recently concluded Presidential, National Assembly, Governorship, State House Of Assemblies, and Area Councils in Abuja Nigeria’s elections.

The Founding Primate of the Council, His Eminence, Archbishop Polycarp Sunday made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Nigeria. “We, the Global Council of Bishops worldwide, are appealing to President Buhari to assent positively to amended Nigeria’s Electoral Bill, not minding the fact that the time frame is short.”

“We posit, this electoral amendment bill be given a fair hearing, and be acted upon speedily with all the support it requires by the Presidency, as Nigeria’s Senate and House of Representatives have passed the bill for the fourth time now, which indicates its transparency and importance, despite Mr. President’s refusal to assent to this bill.”

“Nigerians desire a true and positive change to an electronic system of voting in our General Elections, other than the usual ballot box and thumb printing form of voting our nation has been practising over a decade; as Nigerians have come a long way in accommodating electoral and political changes dating back to the days of National Electoral Commission (NEC), in the days of Mr. Humphrey Nwosu in the late 90’s.”
