Super Falcons star, Asisat Oshoala, and her team-mates at Spanish club, Barcelona, were left heartbroken after losing the league title race to Atletico Madrid, with the team from Spain’s capital lifting a third consecutive league crown on Sunday.
A win for Oshoala’s Barcelona against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano earlier in the year – a match which set a record for most spectators at a women’s football league match – had put Barca back in the hunt to dethrone Atletico as Liga Iberdrola champions.
Oshoala had scored in that historic league match to help Barcelona claim a 2-0 win which helped the Catalan side close the gap on Atletico Madrid at the top of the league table to three points.
But a 1-0 loss for Oshoala and co at Granadilla Tenerife coupled with Atletico’s 3-1 win over Real Sociedad thanks to a hattrick from Esther Gonzalez made sure the Madrid side emerged champions in Spain for the third year running.
Atletico had raced into a 2-0 lead at halftime with two goals from Gonzalez, who completed her hat-trick following the half time break to seal the victory and the league title 10 minutes after Beatriz Beltran had pulled one back for Sociedad.
As a result, Atletico ended the season with 84 points from 30 games, six ahead of Barca, who will play in the Champions League final against hot favourites, Olympique Lyonnais on May 18 in Budapest, the capital of Hungary.
Barcelona reached the final of the Champions League – the club’s first ever appearance in the showpiece match of the competition – after overcoming German giants, Bayern Munich, with a 2-0 aggregate win.
On their part, Atletico have the chance to complete a domestic double when they come up against Real Sociedad again in the Copa de la Reina final on Saturday.
